my real KIM-1

Nov. 15th is the official

"Chuck peddle Day"

Mr. Peddle was the genius behind the 6502 processor. John and I proclaimed this memorial day with the stiputation to turn on your KIM-1 on this day.

I was lucky in an ebay auction and gor a real KIM-1 last June. I bought an RS-232 adapter from retrospy technologies to make it actual usable. But as it turned out, my KIM-1 had some bad memory chips. At least 2 of the 8 2102 RAMs fail sometimes. And additionally two displys are not working 100% either.

So I searched the web for spares, found them and plan to change all 8 RAMs as well as the defective displays. But Desoldering is one of my nightmares. Especially on a historical computer. I do not want to destroy it!.

So I dug out my desoldering iron and tested on a old trash board how to do it the best way. The main problem is that even when most of the solder is sucked out, the chip is sticking in the holes. The only way to not destroy your board is to use a hot air gun. I also build a noozle of an od beer can to not affect the surrounding chips.

So the plan is to desolder all eight 1 kbit Chips, insert sockets and the new chips. Keep your fingers crossed for me!
