The commodeore C64 community is the most active one in the retro computer landscape. There are daily new releases hitting the BBSes (yes, real oldschool Buletin Board Systems) and the quality of this music, graphics, demos and games is mindblowing.

Why is the community still so strong? The commodore C64 was the most sold computer ever. Everyone had one, at least in germany. And the feeling you had, when you, after all the begging, got your parents so far to buy you this bleeding edge computer ("I can use it for school") and then programmed something and it even worked, was pure happieness. So strong in fact, that you never forget about it. Trading disks on the schoolyard was the only option to get new games (beside buying, but, hey, who could have afford this). Copy protections had to be 'removed'. A subculture formed, known as 'the scene'. It was all about cracking, hacking, sharing, programming and tweaking games. A lot of people for sure moved on to other computers, with more RAM and more colors. But the unique feeling wasn't the same and after some years everyone came back to the only true thing. There are even a few commercial Titles released: For example the best C64 game ever produced was Sam's Journey on christmas 2017 ( https://www.protovision.games/games/sams_journey.php?language=de ). If this gem would have been presented in the 80s Sam would undoubtable be more popular than Mario or Giana.

If you do not own an original C64, what is the normal case I guess, you can use an emulator, the most advanced one is called VICE and available for all newer computer systems. http://vice-emu.sourceforge.net/ (it's actually an emulator package for all commodore computers, for the C64 open 'x64').

Letzte Woche war wieder einmal Sperrmüll bei uns im Dorf, und ich habe ein altes "Kofferradio" gefunden. Eines der Modelle, die mich als Kind faszinierten: mit verbautem 12 cm schwarzweiß Röhrenfernseher.



Rational gesehen ist dieses Gerät Schrott. Es gibt keinerlei übertragenes Fernsehsignal, die dieses Ding noch verarbeiten könnte. DVB-T2 ist schon zwei Generationen weiter als von dem Gerät verstandene das analoge UHF / VHF Signal. Und ein Composit (Video) Eingang war damals sowieso völlig unüblich.

Aber ich wäre nicht der Webdoktor, wenn ich solch ein Stück Technikgeschichte einfach so in die Rente schickte.
Ab 5 € gibt es mittlerweile HF Modulatoren in der Bucht. Jene erzeugen dieses veraltete Signal aus allen möglichen Videoquellen. Und selbst der modernste RaspberryPi spuckt ein ebensolches Videosignal aus.

Was liegt da näher als auf 'sofort kaufen' zu klicken und ein wenig zu basteln. RPis fliegen sowieso genügend bei mir im Hause rum...

Ich habe nicht den billigsten Modulator genommen, sondern einen der verlässlicher aussah:



Antenne verbunden, eingestöpselt, Kanal eingestellt. Fertig!



Wie immer fehlt mir die passende Anwendung. Aber hey, warum lecken sich Hunde nochmal im Schritt? Weil sies können!

Happy 24th birthday to FreeDOS!

On June 29, 1994, we started a project called "FreeDOS" to reproduce the functionality of MS-DOS and give away the source code for free. Almost immediately, other developers got in touch, and we began work creating our own version of DOS. I packaged my own extended DOS utilities, as did others, and we found other public domain or open source programs that replaced other DOS commands. A few months later, we released our first FreeDOS Alpha distribution. And from there, FreeDOS grew into what you see today. Happy 24th birthday to FreeDOS!

Ja, und ich habe vor ein paar Monaten dieses FreeDOS auf einen alten P2 gezimmert und wann immer ich Zeit finde tweake ich dran rum, installiere Software (über das Internet) und habe richtig Spass dran.

Nicht nur, dass all die alten Spiele funktionieren, auch Wordperfect5.1 und Staroffice laufen ... Wozu? weiss nicht, aber ein DoS Rechner kann sicherlich nicht von bösen Hackern oder befreundeten Geheimdiensten gehackt werden....

Vor unzähligen Jahren habe ich mal einen C64 gemodded: Den Kernal getauscht und ein 4x40 Zeichen Display eingesetzt, mit Akkus ausgerüstet und so eine Art portablen C64 gebaut.
Das das ganze mehr Spielerei war als von tatsächlichem Nutzen ist klar, denn ohne Diskettenlaufwerk ist der C64 ja unbrauchbar und das will man nicht wirklich rumschleppen.

Gestern habe ich den alten Knaben mal wieder aus der Vitrine geholt um Sams Journey zu spielen (DAS BESTE C64 SPIEL ALLER ZEITEN) und nach ein paar Runden mit Frust habe ich versucht was sinvolles mit dem Display anzufangen:

Kipperterm, eine Basic Terminalprogramm für RR-net netzwerkkarten lässt sich auf das Display ein, ich habe die Terminalgröße auf 4x40 Zeichen gesetzt und schwupps hat das LC Display wieder eine richtig coole Funktion :D



An sonsten stand gestern Schneeschaufeln an... der Winter hat unser Dörfchen wieder voll im Griff!
